Before arranging a trip

Check current advice from your government before booking travel to Cuba. When reviewed on 22 October 2026, British FCDO advice discouraged all but essential travel. Read its live guidance and check whether your insurance covers your plans. A dance guide cannot establish that a journey is safe.

For Havana, start with two established music venues: Casa de la Música de Miramar and Casa de la Música de Galiano. Their names are useful starting points, not a promise of a dance night on your dates. A beginner class offers another way to explore Cuban dancing.

Miramar and Galiano: check the event, not just the address

Cuban music magazine AM:PM lists Miramar at Calle 20 #3308, corner of Calle 35, in Playa. It places Galiano between Neptuno and Concordia, in Centro Habana. Its article dates from 2019: use it for orientation, not current schedules or admission prices.

Ask the venue or your operator whether the room is open for your date and which act is performing. Confirm doors, performance time, admission, accepted currency and whether a reservation is needed. Ask whether the event offers social dancing or primarily a concert. Do not assume every evening begins after eleven or welcomes beginners in the same way.

Casino, rueda and timba are not interchangeable

Casino is a Cuban partner dance often taught internationally as Cuban salsa. Rueda de casino brings several couples into a circle, following calls and often changing partners. Timba names a Cuban musical style, not the dance itself. A programme advertising timba does not tell you how a class teaches casino.

If you learned linear salsa, tell your teacher before choosing a lesson. Ask to practise the movement and timing used in that class. Before joining a rueda, ask which calls the group uses and whether your level fits. Watching first is an option; nobody owes anyone a dance or a lesson on the floor.

Choose a class that fits your starting point

Salsabor a Cuba advertises individual and group classes in Havana, organized around the learner’s level. This is an example to investigate, not a verified booking or a Bold Ocean partner. Ask any school about teaching language, lesson length, price, location and cancellation terms. Confirm how solo travellers practise with partners.

Begin with rhythm, comfortable steps and communication rather than collecting figures. No fixed number of days guarantees ease at a social evening. Tell your teacher what feels difficult and ask for practice suited to you. You can decline an invitation, stop a dance or spend your first visit listening.

Money, changes and the journey home

FCDO guidance reviewed for this guide reports restrictions on international cards and ATM withdrawals. Do not rely on your usual card working. Confirm payment arrangements with your accommodation and providers before departure. Plan sufficient funds for emergencies and keep cash secure; venue payment methods have not been verified here.

Power cuts, fuel shortages and limited connectivity can disrupt plans. Reconfirm an event and arrange your return transport beforehand rather than relying on a late-night connection. Keep room for cancellations. If considering a Puro Estilo stay, use the quiz to organize dates, level and budget excluding flights. Ask the operator to confirm current conditions and arrangements before booking.
